How can an individual be classified as a professional player?
This is a good question that has been debated among leaders in the poker industry for some time. The most accurate answer is that, at this point, there is no real criterion or definition that qualifies someone as a professional poker player.
That being said, today we do have slightly more guidance on this issue thanks to the birth of the Professional Poker Tour (PPT). The PPT sets out the various criteria that one must satisfy in order to enter each of their series.
The definition that I and several others in the industry have adopted is as follows: A professional poker player is a person whose primary income is derived from playing poker and has been for a period of no less than five years. But, like I said above, this is just one of several rather murky definitions.
