I am trying to spend more time in tourneys, and this year hope to enter into more satellites for some of the bigger events. Do you have any perspective on how to do this with success?
Satellites are an excellent and often more affordable way to get into the bigger tournaments. They also provide you with an opportunity to hone your skills and gain some information as to how some of your potential opponents play. This is very valuable.
As far as the best way to approach satellites, that depends largely on the structure and quality of your opponents. Some satellites will provide you with enough starting chips and long enough rounds so that they closely parallel a moderate buy-in tournament. They should thus be approached in the same manner with one major exception: You do not always have to win the satellite in order to get into the main event, as often more than one seat is awarded.
Because of that important factor, you should be slightly less willing to take high-risk/high-reward propositions, because winning the satellite does not pay any more than some of the lower places. That being said, your opponents (and you) have a greater incentive to take a player out if the proper opportunity arises. So be careful not to become too short of a stack, or you will feel like you have a big bull's-eye on your chest. Best of luck to you.
